Summary

Session centered on a critical structural question within Deep Funding: whether work across circles should be primarily task-based, role-based, or a hybrid of both, particularly in relation to improving onboarding, engagement, and system resilience.

Insights from multiple circles revealed that most teams currently operate in a hybrid model, often evolving organically from task-based contributions into informal or formal roles as individuals demonstrate competence and consistency. Task-based approaches were widely recognized as effective for onboarding new members, as they provide low-barrier entry points, immediate participation, and a sense of contribution. Conversely, role-based structures were associated with ownership, accountability, specialization, and long-term efficiency, particularly in more complex or high-stakes functions like operations.

A key theme was the importance of contextual flexibility. Contributors emphasized that the optimal structure depends on factors such as team maturity, skill levels, and the nature of work. For example, senior or experienced members tend to thrive in role-based systems, while newer or less certain contributors benefit from clearly defined tasks. Additionally, concerns were raised about the risks on both sides: task-based systems can lead to lack of ownership and identity, while role-based systems can create rigidity, bottlenecks, or exclusion for newcomers.

From an operational standpoint, the need for resilience and continuity was highlighted—ensuring that multiple contributors can perform key tasks to avoid dependency on individuals. At the same time, fostering creativity, experimentation, and personal growth remains essential, particularly in decentralized and evolving environments like Deep Funding.

The discussion concluded with broad alignment around adopting a flexible, mixed approach, where tasks enable entry and exploration, and roles emerge or are assigned to support structure, accountability, and scale. This hybrid model reflects the ecosystem’s need to balance structure with autonomy, efficiency with inclusivity, and stability with innovation.
